Hi I’m Soma, these are my rescues and their stories.

MY STORY

For as long as I can remember I’ve been pretty much on my own. So I was a young adult when I rescued my first dog, I had no idea it would become such an intricate part of my life. It was late summer of 2007 and I decided to return to NYC after a short lived beach life in Florida. I was in touch with a family that was relocating and could not take this puppy dachshund with them. I said yes to him without ever seeing him. My first fur baby he had to be around 8 months, I named him Moeskii & we lived a nomadic life together. For such a long time it was just us two & it was wonderful.

Fast forward to 2012, I was in my late 20’s and fed up with working dead end retail jobs. As luck would have it a friend of a friend needed a front desk position filled at a dog daycare facility. Little did I know this place would open a passion within me that I didn’t know existed. I found myself extremely dedicated to the quality of service we provided and quickly worked my way up to store manager in less than a year’s time. As wonderful as it was running the stores day to day I found that I wanted a more hands on approach to the field. Soon thereafter an acquaintance would offer me my first dog walking client. As I started to find fulfillment and momentum in my new career things really took off and I loved every minute of it. However in my success, I realized that I wasn’t giving my fur baby the very best of me. After careful consideration it was decided that Moeskii would do better living with the only person who I trusted him with, my Grandmother! Together they thrived and gave each other a new lease on life. Moeskii passed away on Feb 13th 2022 a week before his 15th birthday. He is missed every single day.

In this part of our story we find ourselves in 2018. Things were going well, I was super busy with all my dogs and even had a very good friend of mine, Clarissa start to substitute me when I had to travel or when I was sick. Her love for animals seemed to be simpatico, she seamlessly became apart of the team. One fine day she had come across a scared cockatiel in the street. She then brought him home as it is something that of course we both would do, only to realize that her cat had other things in mind for her new friend, to which case she immediately knew to call me. As a child I always remembered my grandmother having had several species of birds throughout the years. We named him Tico and she held onto him for me until I moved into my own place that coming springtime. It took him a longtime to warm up to physical contact so I would allow him to fly around the apartment & bought him the grandest cage to live in. Life seemed to only get better.

Next up is Winter my first grey husky. I didn’t rescue Winter directly he was rescued by my partner Chris in 2018 at two years old. We then got together early 2020, little did we all know just how crazy year that would turn out to be. While you could tell Winter didn’t let many into his heart after being abandoned by 2 “mommas”, it was very special when he showed me I was a part of his pack. That same year our little guinea pig friend Gleason was found abandoned in the park at 8 a.m. on Labor Day by someone close to me. Yup, you guessed it. Immediately I asked if she needed someone to take him in. Tico & Gleason became the best of friends, whenever I would let him fly about he would spend the better part of his day on the habitat until dinner time or bedtime. We were quite the cute trio, at least that was the case until I received a call from my partner informing me that we needed to head to Queens.

This is where we meet our beloved Hunter, a brown senior husky who was about to be carted off to a shelter where they would undoubtedly put him down. I must admit, I was extremely skeptical that we could provide a good home for him & there was trouble getting him to accept Winter, so after two grueling weeks at Chris’ I decided to bring him home with me. In my home Hunter became the dog he was always meant to be. He felt safe & loved and melted into a snuggle bear. Chris and I did everything we could to give him the best last years of his life. Through countless life saving procedures Hunter succumbed to cancer on May 4th 2022 and my heart was shattered.

Writing this has been emotionally charging so getting everything out is difficult, please excuse the abrupt end I am still finalizing this page.

“This can be a big scary world when you’re alone. There is a very special bond you form with a rescue, providing them a safe and loving environment allows these animals and their unconditional love to thrive. ”
